Roaches Relegate Renter to Hallway

You don't have to wait 3 months. Unsanitary conditions such as you describe are reasonable grounds to break a lease agreement. The legal rationale is that the owner of the building is not keeping THEIR half of the contract by not adequately addressing a very serious health safety problem.

I've seen Boric Acid in powder form do an amazing job of getting rid of them. You should be able to find it in the pesticide section of your local hardware store.

I have first hand knowledge on this matter and here are the facts:

Four separate individuals (2 community employees and 2 third party contractors) turned the apartment, and not one of them saw pest of any type in the apartment. The family that lived in the apartment prior to Tony moving in; lived there six months without one request for pest control service. In addition, his apartment is a corner unit with a hallway in between, so there is no apartment on either side of him and the apartment directly above him has never requested pest control service to remediate a pest issue.

Tony moved here from Florida over thirty days ago and he has been staying with a friend. This means his furnishings were stored either at his friend’s residence or in a storage facility. Did he actually bring the pest with him when he moved here from Florida? Or did he bring them in to the apartment in his used furniture that he purchased off of Craig's List?

What we do know is that there was not a problem in this apartment prior to him moving in and after moving in his boxes and furniture, he left the apartment for a few hours and returned to allegedly discover that his apartment was “infested”. He reported that roaches were painted over on the ceilings; however, his ceilings were not painted during the apartment turn process. Another fact- Florida is one of the highest ranking states for roaches, because they thrive in warm and humid climates. Again, did he bring the pest in himself?

Your blog also states that “the handyman” set off a bomb; however, it was in fact a third party pest control company that serviced the apartment. Your statement that “neighbors are moving out” is totally misleading. Residents in Las Vegas move for many reasons and in some cases they are forced to move out for non payment of rent through the eviction process. If you reviewed the public records in our local court system you would find that this is in fact the case for a “neighbor” that is moving. As far as him sleeping in the hallway; I guess this just made for a better story for him to share with his “media friends” when they came out to do their story. He was offered a model apartment, but declined to use it. Again, I guess the renter sleeping in the hallway was a better headline.

So Carrie, now you have the facts… and so do the readers of your misleading blog.

Some places roaches are endimic to the area. Ie" texas. I lived in Corpus in the 80's and freaked out from them. Lessons learned. Do not leave food out. Place glasses with rims up: roaches or droppings will land in glass, so you know it is contaminated rather than having them crawl all over your glass and still use it thinking it is clean. When they spray or bomb: Place all cereal boxes-unused cereal, that is, in plastic garbage bags and seal tightly-cardboard is absorbent. All fresh food should be put in the fridge, don't leave anything edible out. Childrens toys and bedding should be in bags as well. NEVER bring in cardboard boxes and leave them- shipping contaners are from all over and bugs love them. Look under sinks and remove light sockets, be sure there are no open gaps, if so, get it fixed. When they spray, the entire building should be sprayed. It may be they will have to seal the house and do the big job. If they spray the complex next door, the critters have to move, and they do. Don't rent near palm trees=Palmetto bugs are just another name for giant cockroach. It appears he's infested with the German cockroach (I was employed for a few months at a pest control agency. If they spray wash everything that you'd put near your mouth or wear on your skin unless you've bagged that. If the guy decides to move- he should take everything out of the boxes, and I mean unpack everything and shake it out. Those boxes he has could bring the same problem to his next place. Raid and other things are just something to make you sick.

If I were the guy, I would go to the health department, make a complaint about the living conditions, get a lawyer if they refuse to give back deposit, and move. They're feeding on something in those walls, what?

Channel 13 is a joke, this whole thing was a hoax! This guy is a film student and works for Channel 13! He's been in Vegas a bit longer than 3 days. Wake up people! He was planted there along with the roaches. Where are the nieghbors on either side of him? Wouldn't they be freaking out too? I am familiar with the management of this property and they are some of the best in the business. After taking over this property just a few months ago, the manager has improved this property tremendously. Many more things are now being done for the residents than ever before. The real story lies in what IS being done everyday for the people that live there rather than what isn't being done. Channel 13 and it's aspiring film students should find somewhere else to fabricate their stories!
