Given the chance, who wouldn't want to live near the White House? No matter what your political affiliation, it's fun giving directions ("Just down the street from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue") and a great neighborhood to enjoy history. Who knows, you might run into the Obamas as they head out for a night on the town.
I've written about an outstanding condo on Capitol Hill, at 701 Pennsylvania Ave.
, but at $850,000, the price was a little steep. Here are three homes within walking distance of the White House that are on the market for less than $600,000. Some are so much less that what you save on cost (and square feet), you can spend on high-end clothes to impress Michelle.
There are also plenty of historical sites and national monuments in the Capitol Hill area, giving you and any guests more than enough to do when not enjoying your home.
Home #1: $569,500 condo
This condo at 801 Pennsylvania Ave.
is the closest to the White House. It's a one-bedroom that is so large, according to the real estate agent, that there's enough room for a home office in the living room, and king-sized bed and sitting area in the bedroom. The condo
, built in 1990, doesn't have the square footage listed by the agent, but the floor plan is open and the photos make it look like more room than you'd expect for a one-bedroom, one-bath condo.
It also has two sets of French doors opening to a quiet, interior courtyard that has trees, tables, chairs and umbrellas, for a parklike setting. From the rooftop pool (pictured above) there are clear views of the Capitol and other landmarks.
Comparable homes have an average for-sale price of $536,000.
Home #2: $585,000 condo
Another condo on Pennsylvania Avenue, this one at 601
, is in a luxury building called The Pennsylvania. Located in the Penn Quarter
-- which has more restaurants, museums, galleries and theaters than you are likely to visit in a lifetime -- it has two bedrooms and two bathrooms in 975 square feet.
It's within walking distance of the Capitol, the Newseum, the Verizon Center and two Metro stations. The building has a fitness center, storage room, bike room, meeting room and a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the city. Garage rental is available and the building is pet-friendly.
Comparable homes have an average for-sale price of $552,000.
Home #3: $384,900 condo
With 811 square feet, this condo at 915 E. St.
has only about 150 square feet less than the above condo, but is about $200,000 cheaper. It's across the street from FBI headquarters, which can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing, and is six blocks directly east of the White House.
has hardwood floors, ceramic tile, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and has one large bedroom and one bathroom. Complex amenities include a fitness center, party room, rooftop terrace, and 24-hour concierge. Without many photos from the real estate agent, it's difficult to tell how spacious this condo looks, but the price easily makes it worth a glance.
Comparable homes in the neighborhood have an average for-sale price of $532,000, making this the best deal of the three in price.
Condo #2. While the low price of Condo #3 certainly makes it worth checking-out in person, the available photos, excellent location and price make Condo #2 at 601 Pennsylvania Ave
. the best place to buy to be near the Obamas. The views from the rooftop terrace should make for some great parties.
