Carole King Selling Idaho Ranch for $16M, Discounted From $19M

Singer and songwriter Carole King must be feeling the earth move under her feet, to paraphrase one of her classics. She recently put her 128-acre central Idaho ranch back on the market for $16 million.

That's down from $19 million, in an attempt to signal potential buyers that it's not too late to buy the impressive piece of private park along a national forest near Stanley.

King, who has lived on the ranch since 1981, isn't leaving the state of Idaho completely. She's still keeping a condo in Ketchum, a resort town where she'll probably crash while touring with James Taylor during their "Troubadour Reunion" tour. The two old friends are playing a show on July 12 in nearby Sun Valley, Idaho, at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

Taylor owns a house in Washington, Mass., in the Berkshires.
To call the Robinson Bar Ranch a colossal property would be an understatement. Not exactly for the everyday Idahoan, it is perfect for a wealthy someone who wants to lay low and away from frenetic city life to accomplish perhaps, a new album. With that in mind, the compound has a professional recording studio along with a 7,300-square-foot lodge, a private residence, a caretaker's home, horse barns -- and if "You've Got a Friend" or two -- guest cabins.

The ranch was originally for sale in 2006 at its former price, but was taken off the market due to issues with a bridge on a U.S. Forest Service road. It has since been fixed.

The prolific songwriter, whose most memorable hits include "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" (co-written with ex-husband Gerry Goffin) and "So Far Away," also retains real estate in California and New York. One reason she's selling the ranch, though, is to spend more time with family in Los Angeles.

King isn't the only famous Ketchum resident. Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band also calls Ketchum home. Actor Gary Cooper and writer Ernest Hemingway enjoyed the town's isolation. Ketchum also is where Hemingway took his life. He is buried in the Ketchum Cemetery, as is his granddaughter, the model and actress Margaux Hemingway. Demi Moore and her family have a home in Hailey, just outside the popular Sun Valley town.

With the expanse of forestland that King's listing boasts, one can only assume it will make its next owner feel like a natural woman (or man).
