John Madden Lists Dakota Apartment for $4.9M

john maddenLegendary sports TV commentator John Madden is selling his apartment in the Dakota, the luxury New York City apartment building best-known for its most famous resident, the late John Lennon. Madden, 75, who retired as an television announcer in 2009, spends most of his time in California's Bay Area, these days. The residence is listed at $4.9 million.

Madden purchased the apartment from Saturday Night Live star Gilda Radner in 1985 for $625,000. Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989, purchased it in 1979 for $150,000. The 2-bedroom home is a maisonette of around 2,000 square feet that has a private entrance off the interior courtyard of the Dakota, which is located at 72nd Street and Central Park West. Other features include two fireplaces, original moldings, high ceilings and wood paneling.

Madden still appears on a daily radio broadcast in San Francisco and on Sirius satellite radio during the football season.

good move . . . just like anyone with brains who can afford to get out and is tired of supporting the riffraff/liberal utopia with their tax dollars.

I, personally, feel he has overpriced his unit even though NYC is the place to live and the Dakota is right across the street from Central Park. He can cross the street and walk just a short distance to the John Lennon Memorial in the park; Granted, it is a wonderful location, but did you look at those photos? Good grief, the place needs to be gutted and completely redone. It is hideously ugly inside. It's probably a co-op and permission to do anything will have to be voted on. The people who live there are, probably, not going to want you to disturb their quiet with hammers and noise early in the morning. Nope, that place has too many drawbacks. People are always hanging around outside looking for their elite tenants to go out for a walk. I've heard of some of the tenants fighting over other tenants taking their dogs on the elevator. Too much snobbery can ruin a nice home. And, think of the noise on one of the busiest streets in town. Nope, the remodel alone would keep me from buying even if I could afford to live there. Nice location but that's not everything, Mr. Madden. Madden's home in California is in a much nicer place. I don't know if he still lives in Blackhawk but that is a gated community that protects the homeowners from nuts like the one who killed John Lennon on the street in front of this building in NYC. The weather is better in California too. Where he lives it gets hot in the summer but there's no humidity to make you miserable. Why would anyone really want to live in NYC when they could live in California? There is just no comparison. Yes, NYC is exciting and wonderful but it's a nice place to visit, not live. Too many drawbacks so lower the price and maybe someone who doesn't know any better will think he's moving to a place that can be his heaven, after the remodel, of course.

I don't get it. What do they expect, the buyer will want to see if the personality left some use toilet paper behind so they can sell it.

As far as I know, John Madden has always been a respectable "guy"' who always told it as he saw it.

I like that apartment, but seems like one heck of a mark up considering so much real estate has gone down in value due to the recent economic woes; guess maybe the Dakota may be the exception to the rule. I believe I read an article online about the building recently, it seems it was a pretty old building. Owner financing sounds good, I could pay a few hundred a month, course he would have to keep the taxes up.
