With the 83rd annual Academy Awards wrapped up, what better way to celebrate the winners (and losers) than by ogling celebrity homes? With one of the most interesting lineups in recent Oscar memory, we set out to find photos of the luxe digs that today's most talented actors call home. Find out which Best Actress nominee dances the night away in this regal grand hall, or peer into the eccentric home of Hollywood heartthrob, James Franco. Other stars to grace our list include Javier Bardem, Amy Adams and perennial Oscars also-ran Leonardo DiCaprio.
Los Angeles, CA 90069
Behind this iron-clad entranceway is the home of Javier Bardem, who got his start in acting at the age of 6 when he appeared in his first feature, El Picaro (The Scoundrel). But it was his sexy stud role in the black comedy Jamon Jamon in 1992 that made every woman in the world want to claw down this door to his courtyard with their very bare hands. He was nominated this year for his role in Biutiful -- speaking of which, click on to see this beauty's interior.
Bardem shared this home with actress Penelope Cruz, who may have influenced the decorating. The clerestory windows imbue this three-bedroom, 3334-square-foot home with total sunlight and brightness, to always portray its owners in the very best light. The home sits on just over a quarter of an acre in Hollywood Hills West, just off Sunset Strip.
True to its 1956 birth, the vintage mid-century modern interiors are open and charming for the rather stark design. Such period-authentic decor is a key to the depth and breadth of Bardem, who has recently played down his "brooding sexy" image by taking on brooding, serious roles. But he's not fooling us.
Like most mid-century Cali ranches, this house capitalizes on an open floor plan with wall-to-wall, environmentally correct bamboo flooring. The kitchen has been updated to 2011 gourmet standards with the requisite granite counters. The Balinese design inspiration leads into an open courtyard with a fountain, accessible also from this breakfast room.
Sunset Beach, Orange County, CA
Yes, we know she's living happily in NOLA with her new son, but this is the Orange County love nest Bullock shared with that lecher, Jesse James. The 3,626 square foot Sunset Beach house sold for $4,500,000 cash recently. (What housing crisis?) James bought the home in 2003 for $3.5 million. Still, the sales price was two million less than its original asking. Bullock won an Academy Award for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side in 2009.
The Sunset Beach home has four bedrooms, each with its own in-suite baths. The master bath shower has glass walls, for ocean views. This is also the home where Marcia Diana Valentine tried in 2007 to run over Bullock's former husband, James, with her silver Mercedes. She was said to be an obsessed fan of Sandra Bullock. Try explaining that one at the next open house.
Bullock's had one of the most interesting black books of any Hollywood star, having dated actor Tate Donovan, whom she met while filming Love Potion No. 9 - they were even engaged and the relationship lasted four years. She also dated recently separated Dallas Cowboys football player Troy Aikman (hmmm), Austin musician Bob Schneider, and actors Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Gosling. Bullock lived in Austin, Texas for years and owns a few businesses there still, including a restaurant and a bakery/flower/event planning shop.
The home features a glass-enclosed swimming pool for some much deserved R&R, and a "state of the art" surveillance system, which probably seemed all the more fitting after the Valentine debacle. The 47 year old actress, who has been in at more than 40 films, is the only performer ever to have been named the "Best" and "Worst" performer in the same year. She was asked to return her 2009 "Worst Actress of the Year" Razzie award, because when she accepted it, she accidentally took the original one-of-a-kind prototype, instead of the cheap trinket substitute. The Razzie was for her performance in All About Steve.
Griffith Park, Los Angeles, CA
Natalie Portman's obsessive compulsive Nina, from the Academy Award-nominated Black Swan, would feel right at home in this 1930s-era Laughlin Park estate. It's not so much the stunning architecture or luxe interior that we think Nina would flip for -- it's the breathtaking Grand Hall just beyond these walls, perfect for hosting a ballet recital for even the most dignified of guests. Take a peek inside.
The long and perfectly proportioned living room features a Citizen Kane-esque fireplace, leaded glass French doors that lead to spectacular stone loggia and an elegant grand piano, for hosting the poshest of soirees. The 4,866 square-foot estate feels even more cavernous beneath the beamed, vaulted ceilings. The only thing missing is a tiny golden statuette to complement the grand hall's caramel hues.
If only those rich, wooden walls could talk. A host of celebs have lived here, from actor Dermot Mulroney and Oscar-nominated Catherine Keener, to Grammy winning musician and Scientologist Chick Corea. There is even an oblique connection to Grammy winning singer/songwriter Dave Matthews and his late saxophonist, LeRoi Moore. A family room with leaded glass windows lies beyond the living room.
The kitchen complex includes a butler's pantry with carefully-restored original cabinetry, updated marble counter tops and stainless steel sink. The main kitchen has more marble counters tops and an island with a top-of-the-line Wolf range. And where else would one jot down the evening's gourmet feast but on a grade school chalk board? The eraser should come in handy, since babies can be finicky eaters. Portman is expecting with her dancer/actor husband, Benjamin Millepied, who, by the by, she met while filming Black Swan.
The home has four bedrooms and curiously, only two bathrooms. A dramatic brick terrace stretches the length of the rear facade and overlooks the rectangular shaped swimming pool, which is sunken into the ground without a patio to detract from the garden flow. There are two guest casitas on the manicured grounds. No word on whether the pool and patio have ever been staged with black or white swans.
Sunset Strip, Beverly Hills, CA
James Franco is a man of mystery. From starring in such critically acclaimed films as "Milk" and "127 Hours," to his off-the-wall decision to join the cast of "General Hospital," the 2011 co-host of the Oscars clearly likes to keep us guessing. His taste in real estate is much the same. Click on to see inside.
The impeccable white sofa says Oscars, but the cow-hide upholstery yells "Daytime Emmys." Like his acting career, Franco's living room is a mishmash of high and lowbrow art and style, completely lacking irony. Or maybe that's what he wants us to think. Or maybe kitsch is a topic of lecture in his English class at Yale. That's right, in his spare time, Franco teaches at an Ivy League university. Sort of makes you wonder when he sleeps.
Well if he ever does sleep, it probably would have happened here. Our modern man purchased this Spanish-style villa in 2006 for $2.325 million. But as with his creative whims, he sold the property just four years later at a huge markup -- $3.3 million. So we take away two lessons today. First, James Franco does wonders for property value; second -- if he wanted to lengthen his already illustrious resume, he could add "realtor" in a heartbeat.
The three-bedroom home has gorgeous views of the Hollywood Hills, and you'd never know you are minutes from the Sunset Strip in this backyard oasis, close to the guest casita. It's a shame Franco sold this stunning celebrity hideaway so soon -- but alas, such is the chaotic life of an actor/director/poet/philosopher.
Los Angeles, CA 91208
Price: $1.495 Million
This is the exquisite redwood, concrete and glass home Colin Firth made famous in his portrayal of George Falconer, a gay professor struggling to cope with the loss of his partner in 1960s Los Angeles. The film, "A Single Man," would earn Firth a nomination in the Best Actor category at the 82nd Academy Awards. Designed by architect John Lautner, the home is nestled in the Whiting Woods area of Glendale, CA, 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The now-infamous home has been lovingly updated and is listed for only $1,495,000.
The home is situated at the foot of the Verdugo Mountains, a rugged and isolated clime in the middle of urban development -- the perfect setting for the emotionally fraught film. Built in 1949 as "The Schaffer Residence" by esteemed architect John Lautner, the home bears the hallmark of masterfully rendered Southern California modernism. It's too bad the Oscars don't consider "Best Supporting Architecture" as a category.
With only two bedrooms and one and a half baths, the home is a textbook study of open plan design -- and the perfect space for our "single man." Firth is nominated this year for his role as King George VI in The King's Speech. You may know Firth from his other roles in hits like The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Bridget Jones's Diary, Mamma Mia! and Love Actually. But at this year's Academy Awards, the would-be king could be bound for greater heights still.
Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA
Price: $7,999,000 (reduced from $8,999,000)
Size: 2,374 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
Oscar nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio may not be on Oscar's hot list this year (did the academy members just happen to sleep through Inception?) but his great taste in real estate makes him a winner in our book. This is DiCaprio's third Malibu residence and is located high on the Encinal Bluffs of the area's larger lots. Click on to see inside this dreamboat's seaside estate.
Leo's long-standing distaste for paparazzi is well documented. But if you can't enjoy the fantastic views from every corner of your multi-million dollar bachelor pad without fear of snapping camera shutters, what's the use? This might explain why DiCaprio had a so-steep-it's-almost-vertical staircase constructed leading down the bluff. Paparrazi would be hard-pressed to lug their equipment up that incline.
The home is not huge: two bedrooms, two baths in the uber crisp and contemporary main house. Ah, but guests need not be underfoot nor discreet: there is a detached four-car garage with two separate one-bedroom guest units above. And away.
DiCaprio, who was born and raised in LA, has received many awards, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Aviator in 2004. Which is probably why he feels perfectly fine having cocktails in this view-tastic spa and owning three homes in the area. Emmy winning actor Brad Garrett owns the house next door and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are right down the beach. Very handy when you run out of salt.
New York, NY 10011
Nominated this year for Best Actress in Rabbit Hole, Nicole Kidman and her Grammy award winning husband, Keith Urban, have quite a few homes -- including a contemporary knock-out in Beverly Hills and a 10,925 square-foot Nashville, TN mansion. But this Annabelle Selldorf creation takes the cake. With garages that literally crank up to your skyscraper penthouse (something you have to see to believe) is very fitting for an actress of Kidman's elevated status. Click on for a glimpse at this high-tech celebrity haven.
Trust this writer when she says the views of the Hudson within this property are majestic. She was lucky enough to see them in person on a chance trip to New York. The main floor living space includes a 20 by 22 foot living room with western views, and a combination dining room/kitchen with folding oiled teak panels that, when closed, conceal the kitchen equipment. (The kitchen island also folds down in some units.) This marvel of modern engineering boasts 3,248 square feet, 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathroom. There's a large study/bedroom, covered loggias and, of course, the garage-in-the-sky...
Finally, the pièce de résistance -- the highly coveted sky garage. For anyone who has tried to find parking in New York City, the thought of owning one's very own car elevator is worth the $10 million price tag alone. With this marvel of modern technology handy, the star couple will never again have to circle the block before riding up to their deluxe apartment in the sky.
Location: Beverly Hills, CA
Size: 4,311 square feet
It feels like Los Angeles, but looks like New England. Feast your eyes on Amy Adams’ three bedroom, four bath Cape Cod-cum-Cali crib in the lower Benedict Canyon area of Beverly Hills. The Realestalker dug around and found the property was purchased through a trust in December of 2008 for $1,825,000. Adams lives here with her actor-artist fiancé Darren Le Gallo, and baby daughter born last May. She is nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Mark Wahlberg's love interest in The Fighter, a biographical sports drama.
Who doesn't love crisp whites paired with original hardwoods and streaming sunlight? This combo living/dining features a vaulted and beamed ceiling punched through with sky lights, plus built-in bookshelves, cozy stacked stone fireplace, and French doors that open to a generous flagstone terrace. The doors and the openness makes this 4,311 square foot home feel way larger.
Frameless, frosted, floor-to-ceiling glass panels divide the living/dining room from a study/den with charcoal colored slate floors, more built-in shelving, and vaulted wood ceiling with exposed beams. The home has four bedrooms and three and a half baths including a second floor master suite on the second floor with sweeping tree top views, more hardwoods, a fireplace, and breathtaking views every single night of city lights and Pacific Ocean.
Amy's character in Julie & Julia, Julie Powell, would have killed for this kitchen!
Essentially a galley style space --the most efficient -- it features a long work island/breakfast bar down the center, sleek cabinetry, more sky lights, and stainless steel appliances. Love the exposed wood beams and trusses. The fourth bedroom was reportedly turned into a home gym, and the home also has a stylish media room where we hope Adams and family will be watching her Sunday night!
