A plumber in Florida who found $20,000 in a vacant home and turned the money over to police is being credited for his honesty.

Jerry LaLiberte, 62, of Holmes Beach, was working in the home last month when he discovered two foil-wrapped packets of cash that were hidden in an air duct, WFTS-TV Tampa reports.

"I was scared. It scared me. My hands were shaking," LaLiberte told the news station. "I wasn't sure what to do, to tell the truth."

LaLiberte says the one thing that he never thought to do was to keep the money. So he called his bosses, who in turn called police and the homeowner.

"The old homeowner was a widow who stashed money all over her house," says Stewart Moon of Air & Energy heating and air conditioning service, where LaLiberte has worked for the last 8 years.

"When she died she told her children where everything was. Apparently, she missed some places."

For that reason, police asked Moon not to disclose the location of the house for fear of vandals.

Air & Energy manager Lorna Yankee says she spoke with the homeowner, who wasn't surprised to hear about the stash of cash, The Bradenton Herald reports.

"I guess this hasn't been the first time they'd been left money like this in this house," Yankee says. "They just hadn't found this part of it."

As for LaLiberte, it's rather awkward to be lauded for turning the cash in, he says. "I think it's a shame that I should be a big hero for doing the right thing."

Private employers in the U.S. added 110,000 jobs last month, according to the ADP National Employment Report, more than the 101,000 analysts expected, Reuters reported. Further, the ADP report showed job creation was better in September than first reported. ADP said private employers added 116,000 new jobs in September, up from a previously reported 91,000.

"It is not a huge amount better, but the fact that it was better than expected and there was a revision in the last month's number is a pretty encouraging sign," Peter Jankovskis of Oakbrook Investments in Lisle, Ill., told the wire service.

A second report showed planned layoffs in October fell to their lowest levels since June. After reaching a 28-month high in September, the number of planned job cuts announced by U.S.-based employers fell 63 percent in October to 42,759, according to employment-services firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

As the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests show, many in America's middle class are angry about the uneasy economic circumstances in which they find themselves. Most typical wage earners have endured decades of stagnant wages even as costs for food, health care, housing and college tuition have continued to rise.

In short, average Americans are feeling pinched and far less wealthy than they once did. But there is a way to help reinvigorate the middle class while also rebuilding the nation's failing infrastructure, a recently published study suggests, by seeking to include those who have been traditionally underrepresented in the construction industry.

That aim is being achieved in many places across the U.S. through what are known as community workforce agreements (CWAs), according to a study by Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

First put in force early last decade, CWAs are a form of project labor agreement (PLA) -- contracts that establish work rules on a project-by-project basis -- that have been used for decades by many governments. But CWAs go further, as principal researcher Maria Figueroa recently noted at a press conference in Manhattan, by targeting specific populations for employment on private- and public-sector construction projects.

"The findings of our study indicate that -- particularly since 2004 -- PLAs are becoming comprehensive in their scope," Figueroa said, adding that the most likely used workforce provisions include the training and hiring of veterans, minorities, women, low-income earners and local residents.

Further, the inability to find that first job after college may push some young Americans to consider relocating to a different city in search of better opportunities.

It's probably not surprising therefore that major U.S. cities top the list of the fourth annual Top 10 Best Cities for Recent College Graduates, according to Apartments.com and CareerRookie.com.

The websites used data about the concentration of young adults ages 20 to 24, the inventory of entry-level jobs and the average cost in March to rent a one-bedroom apartment to compile their 10 Best list.

"There are almost three times as many renters moving for new job opportunities this year than in 2010, according to our annual moving survey," Apartment.com's Tammy Kotula says in a statement releasing the latest rankings.

"This tells us that the economy is improving, but people are relocating as a result," she says. And that adds more pressure on new grads to find the right place at the right price, even as they seek to jump-start their professional lives.
