The family of a Russian billionaire has bought a New York City penthouse apartment for $88 million. The Wall Street Journal says the property on Central Park West in Manhattan is now the most expensive apartment in New York.

The seller was Sanford I. Weill, the former head of Citigroup Inc. It was bought by a trust for the daughter of Dmitry Rybolovlev. The deal closed on Wednesday.
Features of the apartment include a wraparound terrace.

The Journal says the sale generated nearly $2.5 million in city and state taxes. The brokers' commission: about $3.5 million. Weill previously said he plans to donate the proceeds of the sale to charity.
Another Russian Holds the U.S. Record

As AOL Real Estate previously reported, Rybolovlev, a Russian fertilizer magnate, was said to be helping to finance the massive purchase for his daughter, Ekaterina Rybolovlev. A statement released by Ekaterina Rybolovlev's representatives in December said that she plans to stay in the New York City apartment while studying at a U.S. university.

But the mantle of priciest home sale in the U.S. still belongs to Rybolovlev's Russian compatriot and fellow billionaire, Yuri Milner, who purchased a $100 million mansion in Los Altos, Calif., in March of last year. See Milner's mansion in the gallery below.

You may recall the story of Texana Hollis, the 101-year-old Detroit woman who lost her home due to her son's ill-advised borrowing, but was set to reoccupy the property after a groundswell of public support. Now Hollis (pictured above) faces yet another obstacle in returning to her family home of nearly 60 years: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has deemed the home unsafe for the centenarian, and is unwilling to foot the bill for improvements. The Associated Press has the latest twist in Hollis' housing travails.

DETROIT -- The federal government now says that a 101-year-old Detroit woman whom it promised could move back into her foreclosed home four months ago can't return because the building is unsanitary and unsafe.

Texana Hollis was evicted Sept. 12 and her belongings placed outside the home after her 65-year-old son failed to pay property taxes linked to a reverse mortgage, The Detroit News reported. Two days later, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said she could return.

But now, HUD said that it won't let Hollis move back in because of the house's condition. She had lived there about 60 years.

"Here I am, 100 years old, and don't have a home," Hollis said, rounding off her age. "Oh Lord, help me."

Department spokesman Brian Sullivan told The Detroit News that an inspection determined that the house "was completely unsuitable for a person to live in."

"We can't allow someone to live in that (atmosphere) now that we are essentially the owners of the property," Sullivan said. "The home isn't safe; it's not sanitary. It's certainly not suitable for anyone to live in, especially not a 101-year-old mother."

HUD doesn't want to pay to fix up the house, but Sullivan said that the department is seeking other agencies that might help with the work and get Hollis back into her home.

"We're not giving up," Sullivan said. "We're talking with anybody and everybody about solutions to this situation, but the condition of the property is a challenge."

After hearing about her longtime friend's eviction, Pollian Cheeks, 68, offered Hollis a room at her home within a mile of Hollis' house. Hollis, who once taught Cheeks in Sunday school at St. Philip's Lutheran Church, accepted the invitation and has been staying at Cheeks' house in the meantime.

"Polly's just as nice to me as anybody could be. She goes out of her way to help me," Hollis said, holding back tears. "It's just like living at home, but it's not my home."
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. -- Fans of MTV's "Jersey Shore" can get a firsthand look at the gym-tan-laundry lifestyle by renting the house where the reality series is taped.
Renters to the home in Seaside Heights have access to the duck phone and the double bed in the Smush Room. But they won't find the usual mess because the landlord cleaned the place.

Renter Joe Ambrosini of Philadelphia tells the Asbury Park Press people took his picture anytime he went out of the deck. The 33-year-old says it was like "buying 15 minutes of fame."

Jennifer Bauer of Toms River says it's cool sleeping in the same bedrooms where the cast stayed. But Bauer says she brought her own sheets.

UPDATE: Reached by AOL Real Estate, listing agent Mike Loundy said there's been no shortage of interested tenants -- it's just not the type of renter you might expect.

"The age of folks [renting the home] is usually 30 and above," Loundy told AOL Real Estate. "We just had a 40th birthday for someone last weekend."

Loundy said about half the viewers of "The Jersey Shore" are between 30 and 60 years old, in his experience. "It's a pretty wild phenomenon," he said.

The lure may have something to do with the home's near-celebrity status. Celebrities are frequently seen visiting the home, Loundy said, though he's sworn to secrecy as to their identity. Two cast members very recently visited the six-bedroom smush pad, as well, he said.
