Meet Danville, a 3,000-square-foot airplane hangar-turned-1940s mini-town on a 25-acre property in Geneva, Fla. Conceived by retired contractor Dan Shaw, the utterly over-the-top home amenity, if you will, contains O'Shaw's Irish Pub, a working bar with a "kegerator"; the Danville Inn, a two-bedroom hotel with a custom kitchen, a lavishly decorated living room, and a balcony; and a 15-by-15-foot movie screen.


A City Within a Garage



Adding authenticity to the town are midcentury antiques, period-appropriate streetlights and phones, and windows sourced from a 1920s house. The best part of Danville is how you get in: With the push of a button, an otherwise nondescript porch -- actually a 2-ton door that cost $25,000 to install -- lifts off the ground and folds up.

After a tease this weekend, it looks like actor/future mayor Alec Baldwin's pad at the El Dorado on Central Park West is officially for sale. As mentioned, the place is asking $9,500,000 for its 3,000 square feet with 3BR, 3.5BA and a staff's quarters. It's got some nice views, being on the 22nd floor, but we actually feel like the place could use a little updating. But then again, there aren't really that many listing photos for us to work with here. Step up your Baldwin game, Corcoran!

You're going to need 50 percent down to pick up the place, so anyone with a spare $4.75M lying around might want to take a look and try to mingle. Oddly enough, when talking about the Upper West Side to the Times just on Monday, Alec said "It is more real.... There's old people, it's ethnic and it's economically mixed. It's not a little kind of jewel-box, privileged pocket of the city like some neighborhoods are." We beg to differ!

While President Obama isn't facing much in the way of in-party competition for the presidency in 2012, on the Republican side candidates are lining up to spar for the nomination. The grand poobah of flashy real estate, Donald Trump, already has backed out and overexposed Sarah Palin has yet to make a decision, but we've got the houses of five candidates who seem willing to go the distance.

One of the early frontrunners is former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, whose 2008 bid ended in a primary defeat to John McCain. Following that letdown, he's revamped his strategy and moved to La Jolla, Calif. The former CEO of private equity house Bain Capital, Romney didn't skimp on his new digs. In fact, he forked over $12M for one of the choice beachfront houses in town, a 3,000-square-foot spread on almost half an acre.

There's no place like home....At least not for actress and expectant mom Kate Hudson, who just paid $5.3 million to buy the house next door to the home she's currently living in--which also happens to be the house she grew up in. No word yet on whether she plans to hold on to both properties. Our friends at Curbed have the full story.

For a second there it looked like actress Kate Hudson could become this season's Lady Gaga, of house hunters that is. Last year the rumor mill was churning over where the lady of the meat dress would be spending her summers--she reportedly settled on Martha's Vineyard. After Hudson scooped up a London pied-a-terre for $6.5M, then started touring houses in Malibu, we were sure to be headed for a summer of entertaining conjecture.

Well, now she's gone and ruined it. Hudson threw down $5.3M for the 1935 Tudor Revival mansion next door to her long-time home in Pacific Palisades, Calif. No word yet on what she plans to do with the 7,000-square-foot spread or her current home, where she spent some of her childhood and considerable expense renovating with the help of Roman & Williams.

Watergate history buffs, take note: The infamous D.C. apartment where journalist Bob Woodward met with undercover informant "Deep Throat" (later revealed to be FBI associate director Mark Felt) is now listed for $215,000. It was here where Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward put a flowerpot on his balcony to signify his meetings with "Deep Throat," the informant (later revealed as FBI associate director Mark Felt) whose intel led directly to the Watergate scandal.
"I would love for someone who's come to Washington early in their career to buy it and fix it up," current owner Chris Blandamer said. "If you're interested in politics or journalism, what better apartment?"

Careful, though, this slice of Nixonian history comes without kitchen appliances or cabinetry: "This is a shell and ready for your creativity," boasts the listing.

Tired of the paparazzi and part-time doorman, Justin Timberlake ditched Tribeca's Pearline Soap Factory for a penthouse at Soho Mews back in December. At the time, he hadn't yet found a buyer for the Pearline Soap pad, a 3,000-square-footer for which he paid around $4.77 million. But now he has! According to the listing and StreetEasy, the apartment is in contract as of yesterday. The ask was down to $4.995 after a small PriceChop of $225,000 back in February. But the place isn't worth our tears.

Rumors have been swirling for weeks that Aniston is the buyer of celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger's terrace-tastic pre-war pad atop 299 West 12th Street (above) in the West Village. But that didn't seem to make total sense because Hershberger's place, asking $5.9 million, has just one bedroom, and surely a megaceleb needs at least that much space just for her shoes. Ah, but there's a plot twist!

But the George Furbeck House, now for sale in Oak Park, Ill., while not immediately recognizable as a Wright, represents a transitional period that points toward the architect's later Prairie Style. Frank Lloyd Wright's George Furbeck House in Oak Park came back on the market last week. But wait: That doesn't look like a Wright! Look a bit closer. The 3,000-square-foot home was built in 1897, during FLW's "experimental and transitional phase," per The Frank Lloyd Wright Tour blog, and it does feature some key Prairie Style elements that Wright would later expand upon. Chicago stockbroker Warren Furbeck commissioned this home and the Rollin Furbeck House, which is just a few blocks away, and gave them to his two sons as wedding gifts (much better than a microwave). An enclosed front porch was added and the third-floor dormer was expanded in 1920. According to the listing, the woodwork, windows, fireplaces and staircases are all original, and the kitchen and baths haven't been updated since the '50s. That pastel color palette in the living room looks like a holdover from the '50s, too. The home was originally listed for $1.1 million last spring, and it was later reduced to $799,000.

Kate Middleton has lived in decent houses from childhood, but marrying a royal takes that whole quality-of-life thing to astronomical heights. Our friends at British real estate site Zoopla write in with a new set of stats that promise to make all 29-year-olds reading this feel even worse about their crappy one-bedroom apartments: Clarence House, where Middleton and Prince William will live once married, is valued at more than $76.68M and worth 343 times the average newlywed starter home ($223,282) in England. Sticking it further are the following stats about Windsor Castle, the royal country retreat (and the largest occupied castle in the world): it's valued at $279M and boasts more than 1,000 rooms over 484,000 square feet.

Eventually King William and his queen will move into Buckingham Palace, which, as the world's most valuable private residence, is currently valued at $1.6B. Kids these days!

World Richest homesMexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú claimed the top spot on Forbes' richest people list for the second straight year. But this year, his recently acquired home on New York City's Fifth Avenue got nearly as much attention. Fascination with the ultra-deluxe real estate dealings of billionaires is nothing new. With a list and photos of the homes of the world's richest people, Rob Bear at Curbed has satisfied that craving.



For the second year running, Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helú has topped the Forbes list of richest people, this time with an estimated fortune of $74B. In the past year, Slim added some $20.5B to his net worth and at least one superlative home to his portfolio, the Duke Semans Mansion on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. The megarich Mexican spent $44M to take over the only remaining single-family home on that storied boulevard. Though now hemmed in by a post-war apartment tower, the facade retains its pre-war elegance and location opposite the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The interior is apparently in need of a serious overhaul, which might explain why the only available photos are close-ups of the fine interior detail. Slim purchased from fellow billionaire Tamir Sapir, who had planned on opening a museum of his own-to display his massive collection of ivory-until he was busted for trying to illegally import some of that collection aboard his yacht. We're guessing that's the sort of absentmindedness that earned former cab driver Sapir his lowly $1.4B net worth.

Recently, Land's End, the grand Long Island, N.Y., estate that moved F. Scott Fitzgerald to create the fictional town of East Egg in Gatsby fell into serious disrepair. Land's End, the Sands Point, N.Y., estate rumored to have inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's vision of Daisy Buchanan's house in The Great Gatsby, has surely seen fairer times. The colonial revival is spending its final days as a decaying, peeling mess as it waits to be razed and turned into a development community community. But like all Stanford White-designed properties built during the turn of the 20th century, it once had serious grace and grandeur, as proven by an old listing brochure posted on blog Old Long Island. We're awaiting confirmation of what year it's from, exactly, but it lists the house (as well as its on-grounds caretaker's cottage and two greenhouses) for $2.5M-and that includes "all furniture, drapes, linens, complete service of English threat silver and Baccarat crystal for 48, furnishings in all bldgs." To boot: we're assuming the brochure is from far before November 2009, when Land's End hit the market for $30M.

Presumably in preparation for an upcoming appearance on Rich Bride, Poor Bride, a British couple named William and Kate toured several rental ballrooms in Slough, England, before deciding to save a little money by holding their wedding reception at his grandmother's house instead. Okay, well it doesn't hurt that the Archbishop of Canterbury christened you there, grandma regularly holds soirees for 1,500 people in her ballroom, and that grandma is the Queen of England. That's right, when Prince William and Kate Middleton finish tying the knot at Westminster Abbey, they'll head across town to a palace that was, according to the royal wedding website, purchased by King George III in 1761 to "use as a comfortable family home close to St James's Palace. Buckingham Palace might not need an introduction, but we've rarely seen pictures of its overtly opulent interiors (above). But after the fancy episode at the palace, it's off to the Islands of Scilly for, as the Daily Mail put it, "a budget honeymoon." Yep, even the prince is pinching pennies.

Instead of jetting off to the Seychelles or some other far-flung British protectorate, the royal couple are reportedly planning on spending their honeymoon much closer to home, on the Isles of Scilly. No, not the Italian island of Sicily, the British islands of Scilly.

With Paris Fashion Week just winding down, we thought it prudent to take a look back at some of our favorite model homes. No, not the developer one-offs; rather, the homes of supermodels, aka the globe's sexiest residents. Well, it turns out the same people that strut before cameras for a living don't tend to bring the shutterbugs to their places of residence. Camera shy as they might seen at home, we still managed to find some model homes worth a damn. Now, off to the residential runway!

Jessica Stam doesn't yet have the blue-chip name of Gisele, Heidi Klum, or Cindy Crawford, but she just might be the next big thing. Discovered in a coffee shop in Ontario, Canada, Stam's north-country heritage doesn't show much in her calculated rise to popularity, or in her NYC digs (above). Her gut-renovated apartment, published in a past issue of Elle Decor, is finished in a pastel purple color fit for a girly girl. But it turns out young interiors guru Rafael de Cárdenas was responsible. "I had been living there for a year, and my books were still in boxes," Stam says. In fact, Cárdenas disposed of all her half-assed attempts at decorating (the only remnant was a taxidermy rattlesnake), and crafted this bachelorette pad from scratch. No word on how much she's been spending, but the rising star took home $1.5M last year and has a house in East Hampton. Not bad for a young one.
