Baseball star Alex Rodriguez dreamed up this bayfront Miami mansion around the time he was dating actress Cameron Diaz. The Yankees regular spent an estimated $15 million constructing the custom love shack, complete with nine bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, and 19,000-square-feet of luxury.

But soon after his relationship with Diaz soured, A-Rod lost interest in the property altogether, and put it up for sale for a whopping $38 million, before pulling it from the market in January. It was then reportedly rented to a coterie of Saudi sheiks, before finally selling -- perhaps to those very royals, but TMZ sources say a celebrity -- for $30 million. A-Rod may have lost the girl, but at least their would-be family home netted him a cool $15 million.

Spotted over at Co.Design: Edgeland House, a glassy, open residence with ever-popular grassy roofs, also brags a badge of sustainability, completing the site remediation. Another bonus: the place was built for an unnamed sci-fi writer and his family, so the whole sharp-modernism-meets-ragged-post-industrialism bit speaks to the client's personal tastes.

"The owner was very engaged with the process at the early phase of schematic design," co-principal Thomas Bercy told Co. Design. "It is not every day that you have discussion about Paul Virilio's Bunker Archeology with a client."

The Skinny: The one and only Delaware house designed by iconic American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Dudley Spencer House, completed in 1958, was listed last month for $1.35 million. Tucked away on more than 6 acres, amid a dense stand of old-growth trees, the low-slung structure houses three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and ample indoor and outdoor entertaining space. The furnishings, particularly a pair of dated, overstuffed couches, detract from the architecture, but that's nothing that a new owner couldn't address, plus there is still plenty of built-in furniture designed by Wright. That the listing is lacking photos of the kitchen suggests that it is either in original condition, and thus poorly suited to the needs of a modern cook, or that it has been garishly overhauled. Still, the Spencer House is notable as one of Wright's last commissions; he died in April 1959.

Across the street from the Botanical Garden in Atlanta, a two-bedroom condo at 1 S. Prado defines cozy. Its solid bones translate through listing photos, but the most appealing aspect of the Neil Reed-designed building lies in what's no longer there: Atlanta's matriarch scribe, Margaret Mitchell.

The 1920 building is dedicated to Mitchell, who lived here for a decade beginning in 1939. The day after her death, her secretary and the building custodian burned the original "Gone With the Wind" manuscript in the boiler room, according to placards on the building. As for the top-floor condo, it's got 1,332 square feet, a separate dining and living room (sorry, open floor-plan zealots), a sun porch-slash-office and city views. The ask is $310,000.

Beware that, as with other buildings in this area, the number of assigned parking spaces (one) doesn't necessarily correspond with bedrooms.

Brokerbabble for Durrington House, last listed for 4.65 million pounds ($7.22 million), calls it "one of the finest houses in the area," with a primary country house and "ancillary accommodation" that includes four self-contained cottages -- one with an 18th-century clock tower! -- plus potting sheds and a greenhouse. La Habra Heights

As of September 2010, this decadent 9,000-square-foot villa in the obscure Los Angeles suburb of La Habra Heights was asking an astonishing $21 million. After two long years on the market, the property was divided and the price chopped all the way down to $7 million. Worse yet, it still has yet to sell.

Why? Well, aside from the initial outrageous asking price, the place has some explaining to do when it comes to the oddball decor and beyond-unique features, like a fountain in the swimming pool, a Playboy Mansion-esque grotto, garish lighting, knockoff frescoes, a bizarre master suite, and a basement casino stocked with slot machines. All of these extravagances were installed by the owner, the Romanian-born "trucking magnate," Nick Radoi.

Chris Evans' Laurel Canyon home

Hunky movie star Chris Evans -- perhaps best known as Captain America -- paid some $3.52 million for a recently renovated midcentury ranch in the Laurel Canyon neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills.

The 4,600-square-foot house was purchased by a flipper in June for $1.9 million. That owner completely renovated the three-bedroom pad, adding an updated kitchen, refinishing the floors, and generally gussying up the otherwise typical home.

That work paid off, as the house was listed for $3.5 million and eventually sold to Evans over ask, amid a flurry of bids. The swimming pool and several outdoor entertaining spaces enjoy gobsmacking views of L.A., which may help to explain the profit reaped from such superficial upgrades.

When Theodore and Marsha Nierenberg, founders of the Scandinavian tabletop firm Dansk International Designs, needed to build a house atop their scenic, 22-acre slice of land in Armonk, N.Y., they knew just who to turn to: Jens Quistgaard, Dansk's chief designer, who was game for the task of putting his signature kitchenware aside for a moment to, well, design a house.

The 7,100-square-foot structure was completed in 1961 and first put on the market for $7.5 million in June 2010, the year after Ted's (as he was known) death. His widow has been trying to sell the place ever since, listing, de-listing, and re-listing the seven-bedroom creation again and again; most recently, for a much-reduced $5.5 million.

Given the current obsession with this era of architecture, it's unclear why, exactly, the Dansk Lake House hasn't had any takers yet. Sure, the roofline is a bit eccentric-it "bears a resemblance to scales on a dragon's back," as Realtor.com puts it -- but the interiors are lovely, with gleaming wood floors, a massive brick hearth, vaulted ceilings, a stunning spiral staircase, and glass walls indulging the Nierenbergs' original aim to have "a house with a view, especially here since we have a beautiful piece of land," as Marsha told the Journal in 2010. That land, with a waterfall and gardens, overlooks a 10-acre lake.

There's more than one castle in Johnson City, Tenn., but few boast the travails as the one formerly owned by local car dealer Steve Grindstaff. Using using Spain's Palacio de la Magdalena as inspiration, Grindstaff spent more than a decade building the mansion -- he "always dreamed of being a knight and one day living in a castle," his wife once told The Wall Street Journal about the undertaking. In 2008, five years after construction wrapped and no knighthood in sight, he hoisted it on the market for $28.5 million -- an egregious, utterly inconceivable price tag for a town ranked No. 5 on Kiplinger's 2012 list of the country's 10 least expensive cities for living. Unsurprisingly, the price of 24,000-square-foot lakeside castillo was chopped rather brutally (down to $19.5 million at one point) and sent to the auction block two years ago without a reserve.

The property never actually got the gavel, however: Thanks to a flurry of renewed interest from a few prospective buyers at the time, it was taken off the block and sold in summer 2011 for $3.36 million to folks who have just listed the place for $4.85 million.

A bit about what's for sale: the interiors feature a hand-carved antique bar, stained-glass windows, an indoor basketball court, a theater (with a ticket booth!), and custom moldings "designed and hand carved onsite by Greek craftsmen," brags the brokerbabble. Because it's always fun to boast about things being transported from one place to another, there's also a billiards room "complete with an imported pub from England" and 22-foot front doors imported from a Parisian music conservatory. On the grounds, there's a pool, a boat ramp and dock, three slips, four Jet Ski lifts, a 14-garage illuminated by enormous neon Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce logos, and, surely the piece de resistance, a 1/13 replica of Bristol Motor Speedway. Vroom!

Comedic actor Vince Vaughn ("Wedding Crashers," "Anchorman," "Dodgeball") has picked up what is perhaps Southern California's least offensive, unobtrusive and numbingly traditional house: a five-bedroom Colonial he bought for $3.925 million.

Though once noted as one of the priciest listings in the city of La Canada Flintridge, the 5,563-square-foot abode -- boasting a very "Father of the Bride"-style façade, some nice, unexceptional interiors, an amply treed tennis court, and a swimming pool -- ended up selling to Vaughn for less than a quarter of what the actor is asking for his other property, an exponentially flashier 12,000-square-foot triplex penthouse in Chicago that has been floundering on the market since 2011.

Of course, his new pad -- which, you know, doesn't include Hugh Hefner's original Playboy office -- is much more family-friendly, and considering that Vaughn's just announced that he and his wife are expecting baby No. 2, the shift in real estate holdings is hardly surprising.

Back in summer 2011, newlyweds Katy Perry and Russell Brand dropped $6.5 million on a cavernous compound in Los Angeles, complete with coffered ceilings, huge fireplaces, and a stone-walled foyer. Ever since the couple's divorce last year, pop princess and "Teenage Dream" Perry has been trying to sell the house as a pocket listing -- that is, without hulking all 8,835 square feet of faux Mediterranean manse into the realm of public mastication. Ah, but sometimes a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do, and having failed to find a buyer willing to fork out the near $8 million she was hoping for, Perry has finally officially listed the place for $6.95 million, offering a glimpse into the overwrought Spanish spread she never got around to actually living in.

OK, so besides being able to say that Katy Perry once owned it, what does the buyer get for nearly $7 million in SoCal? A grotto-style pool, for one, as well as a murmuring brook, a Japanese-style bridge and garden, a guesthouse, and interiors that look like somebody really wanted this seven-bedroom house to be a medieval castle: stained glass, stone walls, carved mantles and all.

For those of us who haven't read "Fifty Shades Of Grey," you might be as surprised as us to learn that the major events of the steamy book series take place in the penthouse of the Escala tower at 1920 4th Avenue in Seattle. Even if you haven't read the book, you're probably not surprised to learn that the real-life penthouse has sold for the massive price tag of $6.2 million. According to brokers, it's the highest price for a Seattle condo in three years.

No, author E.L. James wasn't the seller. She's never actually set foot in the penthouse she's made famous, merely using it as a stepping-off point for the one in her novels. However, the 5,100-square-foot condo with a 1,000-square-foot terrace looks extremely similar -- to those who have read them. The single-family house conspicuously plunked atop another building is an inane embarrassment somehow gaining currency around the globe. If it's a really expressive execution or an exhalation amid extreme urban density, that's one thing, but when it's just some random town home fused with a mismatched two-story base on a West Town dead end you have to wonder.

The interiors are mellow and generic -- about what you'd expect from a new-ish town home development. The huge private deck with clear-path views of downtown is the exceptional product of the home's very odd configuration (that bucket of beers is some fine staging).

Because of the neighboring rail yards stretching to The Loop and the low-profile houses and industrial buildings that cluster nearby, the upper floor also hogs the nice views. And that, friends, nearly earns it a pass. New-to-market, the 1,800-square-foot three-bed is asking $439,900.

Good news, movie fans: the stately, historic South Carolina house that starred in the '80s classic "The Big Chill" has hit the market for the first time in a quarter of a century. Tidalholm, as the estate is called, featured in the flick in no small way; it was here, among crazy-opulent crown moldings and picturesque verandas, that a group of college friends reunited for one weekend (of drama! intrigue! suspense!).

A bit of history not related to Glenn Close: the Italianate-style manse was originally built in 1853 as a summer retreat for cotton magnate Edgar Fripp, and was used by Union troops as a hospital during the Civil War. The Fripp family later regained the property in a roundabout way; ever fortuitously, it was sold at auction to someone who gave it right back to them. While Tidalholm worked a short shift as a guesthouse from the 1930s to the '70s (when it "entertained many artists, authors and statesmen," according to the Brokerbabble) today it's being sold as a private home by owners who want "it to go to another family," one of their relatives told The Beaufort Gazette. "It's time for it to be filled with dogs and children and cats."

Sure, the 7,381-square-foot interiors look a bit formal to let pets run wild-original flooring and moldings throughout the traditional center-hall layout, not to mention some formal, expensive-looking furniture-the outdoor space is rather spectacular, what with multiple wrap-around verandas, a two-bedroom guest cottage, a private dock, and oak trees.

Not content to simply commandeer living rooms and gondolas or serve horsey meatballs, Swedish furnishings overlord Ikea is well on its way to erecting a bona fide Ikea town, 26 acres of peppy Scandinavian sprawl near Olympic Park in London. Fast Company recently wrote up the fascinating (if easily mocked) Strand East, unveiling some intriguing factual tidbits. The top 10:

1. Included in Ikea's masterplan: shops, schools, theaters, a hotel and, you know, apartments for 6,000 people.

2. Strangely absent? An actual Ikea store.

3. Starting prices for the town's flat-pack houses, called BoKlock, are less than half the price of an average British house -- $112,500 vs. $260,850.

4. Some market analysts think that creating Ikea housing is a bad move for the company: "Personally, I think they're a bit insane, because there's nothing with a longer shelf life than a house," Euromonitor retail analyst Antonia Branston told Fast Company. "What if, in 20 years' time, Strand East is known for crack houses?"

5. Of the 1,200 houses to be built, 40 percent will be large enough for families, and 15 percent of them will be earmarked as affordable housing.

6. Speaking of housing: "While the houses won't be assembled with Allen wrenches or landscaped with lingonberry bushes, company executives insist that they'll be offered in the same spirit as the furniture -- with high (enough) quality and low prices for all."

7. The whole shebang will supposedly cost around $500 million.

8. This is but one of many major projects in the works: The company's LandProp division has another spot of land north of London, is set to embark on a $1.45 billion project in the U.K.'s Birmingham, and is reportedly shopping around for potential sites in Hamburg, Germany.

9. Despite the scale of Strand East, profits will still be small apples compared to Ikea's furniture sales, which will probably grow steadily thanks to store expansions in China and future openings in India. Fast Company calls the town a "legacy-building exercise."

10. Ikea also owns wind farms, office parks and, of course, a line of electronics.

The Skinny: Just weeks after closing on a 9,000-square-foot McMansion in Bel Air and reported plans for a gut renovation, hip-hop star Kanye West and reality TV regular Kim Kardashian have decided to cohabitate elsewhere. According to recent reports, the duo have flipped the property for around a million more than they paid. Redfin lists the previous sale price at $9 million, so it seems Kim and Kanye have unloaded the place for somewhere around $10 million. The mansion, completed in 2010 on less than an acre in the Holmby Hills neighborhood, features five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, but that wasn't enough for the celeb couple, who were planning to gut the place and expand to 14,000 square feet.

Meet Danville, a 3,000-square-foot airplane hangar-turned-1940s mini-town on a 25-acre property in Geneva, Fla. Conceived by retired contractor Dan Shaw, the utterly over-the-top home amenity, if you will, contains O'Shaw's Irish Pub, a working bar with a "kegerator"; the Danville Inn, a two-bedroom hotel with a custom kitchen, a lavishly decorated living room, and a balcony; and a 15-by-15-foot movie screen.

Adding authenticity to the town are midcentury antiques, period-appropriate streetlights and phones, and windows sourced from a 1920s house. The best part of Danville is how you get in: With the push of a button, an otherwise nondescript porch -- actually a 2-ton door that cost $25,000 to install -- lifts off the ground and folds up.

After a tease this weekend, it looks like actor/future mayor Alec Baldwin's pad at the El Dorado on Central Park West is officially for sale. As mentioned, the place is asking $9,500,000 for its 3,000 square feet with 3BR, 3.5BA and a staff's quarters. It's got some nice views, being on the 22nd floor, but we actually feel like the place could use a little updating. But then again, there aren't really that many listing photos for us to work with here. Step up your Baldwin game, Corcoran!

You're going to need 50 percent down to pick up the place, so anyone with a spare $4.75M lying around might want to take a look and try to mingle. Oddly enough, when talking about the Upper West Side to the Times just on Monday, Alec said "It is more real.... There's old people, it's ethnic and it's economically mixed. It's not a little kind of jewel-box, privileged pocket of the city like some neighborhoods are." We beg to differ!
