We talked about her experience in a small space, decorating tips, and more:

Can you tell us about your downsizing experience?

Victoria Vargas: I've tended to live in smaller spaces for most of my adult life. When in grad school, it was out of financial necessity and then afterward, as a preference. When I moved back to Phoenix six years ago, however, I upscaled to a more spacious luxury apartment and felt odd and out of place there. It had too much unused space and I rambled around it, trying unsuccessfully to make it feel cozy, but ended up feeling out of place and frustrated.

Not surprisingly, I soon scaled down again, this time to a 440-square-foot trailer, while I started saving for a house. This was in the midst of the real estate boom and housing prices were insane. Eventually, as prices began falling, I started looking around. To my frustration, I couldn't afford the smaller homes that were close to where I work, which is near the university. After weeks of finding nothing close to what I wanted that was in my price range, I stumbled upon my current house, a 1949 yellow and white cottage in a small post World War II-era neighborhood. It was lovely. Plus, all the people I saw out walking around, working in their yards, and chatting with each other delighted me. It had the feel of a real neighborhood.

In addition to being 14 miles from where I work, it was also 1,200 square feet. That may not seem large to some people, but to me it was huge! It was the only thing I could find at the time in my price range, in a decent neighborhood, and that was close to the light rail. So, I compromised and bought it.

Almost immediately, I found myself starting to have some of the same discomfort I had in that luxury apartment. There was simply more space than one woman and a tiny cat needed or would use. After some thought, I realized that the family room addition at 375 square feet was plenty large enough for my primary living space. If I downsized to it, I could rent out the two bedrooms and living room. My housemate and I would only have to share the kitchen and bathroom. Perfect!

To see if I'd be comfortable living in the family room, I first moved my bedroom in there. It was wonderful. So soon after, I moved in my home office furniture and equipment ... then a few weeks later, my living room furniture. It was perfect!

It isn't crowded at all and I get to live in one, coherent space with everything close by. Now I'm doing a few improvements on the other rooms and getting ready for a new housemate.

Can you give our readers three tips to live creatively in a small space?

Creativity is exactly what is needed for living in small spaces, as well as flexibility. First, it helps to let go of preconceived notions of how spaces should be used. Don't get locked into their current or designed function. Converting a family room into a studio apartment may not be a conventional use of that space, but it was a perfect solution for me. There's a brick fireplace, bay windows in front, and front doors leading onto a small private patio in back. I also installed a door between the kitchen and my new digs for privacy. It's the best room in the house and makes for a lovely little home all on its own.

One drawback is that my new living space lacks a closet. There simply isn't enough space for me to bring in a wardrobe or dresser without making the room feel cluttered and claustrophobic. One possibility I was considering was to elevate my bed and build a platform with shelves and drawers beneath, which is a great strategy when storage is scarce. That would work, but quite honestly, I love my current bed headboard and frame and it felt like a waste to let those go.

Fortunately, my family room adjoins to the kitchen and right next to that entry between the two is an unfinished small space, which was likely intended as a walk-in pantry. I hung a curtain across its entry and voila, it's now the perfect space for my closet. It provides a bit of discrete storage for files, my tools, and camping gear. I'll add shelves at one end that are just large enough to fit a few plastic tubs and file boxes, a hanging clothes rod, some clothing shelves, and a shoe rack.

Second, it's important to understand your design style and preferences. Some people who are downsizing are drawn to a spare, modern design with clean lines. Clear surfaces, only a couple key pieces of art, simplicity and a light color palette definitely give a small space a feeling of space and calm. Others, like myself, prefer a bit more texture, color, and artwork. Understanding what makes us comfortable in our spaces makes it much easier to cull our belongings and only keep those things that fit our vision for our space.

Finally, to live well in a small space well, it's important to let go of those things we don't need, love or use regularly. Otherwise, it will be a crowded, cluttered, and stressful environment. What helped me as I moved into my space was to bring in only those things that I needed and loved. Once I positioned all the furniture I was going to use and that fit the space without being crowded, then I hung my art. Then, very slowly I brought in a few framed photographs, books and other special items at a time, until it felt comfortable. That's it. Whatever remains will be donated to charity, sold through Craigslist, or given away through Freecycle.

Can you give our readers a few tips to make their small space cozy?

Absolutely! What I found most helpful was to stick to a single color palette. Warm colors are the coziest to me, so I focused on moss greens, brick reds and golds. When I moved into the house, my friends and I painted my family room a warm, pale chamois color. It was a perfect match with my furniture and art when I condensed my living space down to this room, so I kept it.

Keeping patterns to a minimum is also helpful to keep a small space feeling cozy and comfortable. The main pattern in my space is brought in by my small love seat, which has a muted tapestry pattern. Everything else in the room compliments it and keeps it feeling pulled together. I'm also a big fan of fabric to help make a space feel intimate. I have a few fabric accent pillows on the bed and I hung some curtains across the bay window and in the door's window to soften the space.

Finally, I find that lighting is especially important in a small space. Big, glaring overhead lights can make a small space feel too cell-like, cold, and impersonal. Task lighting and a bit of accent lighting like small table lamps and candles bring a warmth to any room, but really kick up the cozy feel of a small space. If you have a fireplace like my space has, putting candles on a tray in the fireplace is a great way to bring that warmth and coziness into the room regardless of the season. With a fireplace screen placed in front, it's also a great strategy for keeping open flames safe from curious kitty paws.

The concept of open closets has been popping up all over the internet. I love this idea, especially for small spaces. It's a great way to display your beautiful wardrobe and it's a fun design idea. This might not be for everyone, but it's something to consider. Especially, if you're tight on storage space and live in a pre-war apartment building.

Many older apartment buildings were designed before built-in closets became standard. And that can be a big problem if you live in a little apartment. If you lack standard closet space there are a number of options to store your stuff out in the open. A few ideas include devoting a portion of a wall to storage, using a freestanding rack or converting a shelf to storage space.

Let's look at a few creative closet ideas:
Whitney's IKEA Wall Unit: Whitney, her husband, and their little pup live in a 300-square-foot apartment in New York City. To keep their clothing and office stuff organized, Whitney purchased an IKEA wall-organizing unit. She says, "It is home to our desk, extra closet space and storage. It's the central hub of our home and small business. Without this unit, things would probably be a bit more chaotic."

Laura's Convertible Closet: Laura lives in a beautiful 250-square-foot apartment and is a profession organizer. She doesn't have a standard closet in her teeny tiny apartment. Instead she created a convertible closet that fills one wall of the bedroom. Laura's "clothes and shoes are not behind a closed door but are as beautifully displayed and on view to all who have access to her bedroom."

I hope these two examples inspire you to bring your closet out in the open and to keep your clothes well-organized.
Especially, for those of us who live in very tiny spaces. When you have company over for a dinner party or want to spread out to work on a crafting project, you can literally hide your bed.

Let's take a look at the history of the hideaway beds (a.k.a. the Murphy Bed) and a few examples of how this idea has evolved.

The Murphy Bed Company was created by William L. Murphy who "moved to San Francisco at the turn of the century where he met his future wife. He lived in a one-room apartment that had a standard bed taking up most of the floor space. Because he wanted to entertain, he began experimenting with a folding bed, and applied for his first patent around 1900."

The Murphy Bed Company is still open for business and has a number of unique designs on the market.
Moddi Murphy

Are you a crafty, do-it-yourself type person? Then head over to the Moddi Murphy Bed website. They offer plans for building a basic murphy bed for under $275. It's so easy to build this bed that "all you will need is a power drill. That means no power saws, no sanding, no saw dust, and no smelly stain!" Now that sounds like a fun project!
But keeping and displaying sentimental items is especially difficult for tiny-space dwellers. If you're faced with the problem of too many meaningful mementoes and not enough room, here are a few ways to get the situation under control.

1. Consider passing along heirlooms.

In "The Joy of Less: A Minimalist Living Guide," Francine Jay -- a.k.a. Miss Minimalist -- writes, "Instead of squirreling away mementos, honor the person you lost by sharing stories and photographs of them with friends and family.... Our obligation then is not necessarily to keep the items we inherit but to find the best possible home for them. We've been entrusted to steward them to a new home; but it doesn't have to be ours."

Jay recommends lending valuable or historically significant items to a local museum or historical society. Other options include selling less cherished objects on eBay and digitizing old photos and postcards.

2. Donate your wedding dress to charity.

This one is for all the ladies. Your wedding dress and accessories can take up a lot of excess space. For instance, I had my wedding dress, train and veil preserved in a very large box, which I ended up moving from apartment to apartment for about four years. I was 99 percent sure that I would never wear the dress again. So when we started downsizing our life, I donated it to a local charity -- a good one for wedding dresses and accessories is Brides Against Breast Cancer.

3. Downsize souvenirs.

If you decide to bring something home from a trip or vacation, make it small -- or better yet, digital. Digital photos are a great way to preserve memories, and they don't take up any space! You can also capture memories and feelings by creating sentimental journals or scrapbooks that you can keep neatly arranged on a shelf.

4. Organize your collectibles.

A few months ago, I wrote a post about how to showcase your collections without turning your apartment into a clutter bomb. So if you're not ready to part with your stuff, think about functional ways to display your collections.

Remember: Memories are more valuable than stuff. Hold on to possessions that bring you joy. Don't hold on to stuff because you feel a sense of obligation or guilt.
But chances are that you have a roof, and that's a great place to start an edible gardening project.

Apartment Therapy recently featured the story of Basil Lee. He's a Brooklyn-based architect who has transformed his roof into an "urban escape" where he grows pots of heirloom tomatoes and blueberries, as well as parsley, mint, basil, rosemary and sage. His example shows that it's possible for small-space dwellers to have access to fresh, homegrown food.
Container gardening is a perfect way to get started. All you need is access to a roof, your landlord's permission and a few tools.

At your local garden center you can pick up the essentials, which include:

Planters or pots. According to Garden Guides, glazed ceramic pots are the best choice because they stand up to the elements and don't dry out as quickly as unglazed terracotta or rot like wood. You'll just need to make sure that they have adequate drainage holes at the bottom.

Potting soil. You can buy a readymade potting mix, or consider starting your own indoor compost bin, which will provide you with a great growing medium.

Seeds or sprouts. Buy them at the garden center or order online. Good veggies to grow in pots include various types of lettuces, herbs, tomatoes (especially cherry tomatoes) and peppers.

Tools, such as a small trowel and a hand-held cultivator (garden claw).

Then all you need is a sunny spot -- most herbs and vegetables require a couple hours of full sun per day -- and regular watering. Potted plants are prone to drying out, so you may need to water daily, especially in the heat of summer.

Enjoy!

The challenge was started by Dave Bruno, who calls it "my little way to personalize my efforts to fight American-style consumerism."

"A lot of people around the world feel 'stuck in stuff,' " Bruno explains. "They feel like their closets and garages are too full of things that don't really make their lives much better."

After reading about the 100 Thing Challenge, I decided to commit to living for a full year with only 100 personal items. At that time, we lived in a huge two-bedroom apartment, with two cars, overflowing closets and a kitchen stuffed with two sets of dishes and silverware. The 100 Thing Challenge has helped me streamline and simplify my life.

Whether or not you go to the extreme that I did, the 100 Thing Challenge is a useful exercise. No matter how much stuff you have, the challenge will force you to inventory your possessions and examine your buying patterns. The intent is to figure out what you really need in your life so that you can focus on what matters. Here are some tips for getting started:

1. Start small

You don't have to get rid of all your stuff to start this challenge. Take small steps every day. For instance, try donating 10 items a week to the charity of your choice.

2. Say no to recreational shopping

Learning to live lightly and creatively in a small space is one of the reasons I'm participating in this challenge. So it's essential to stay out of the mall. If you don't go shopping, you won't be tempted to come home with stuff you don't need or want.

3. Be patient

Downsizing is a process, so don't be hard on yourself if you're having a difficult time saying "no" to the consumer lifestyle. Be patient with yourself and find a support network. For instance, friends and family have helped us stick to the challenge.

Browse through photos of millions of home listings or search for rentals

4. Stuff is a burden

Too much stuff is a burden. Especially, when it comes to cleaning. Being clutter-free means I don't have to spend an excess amount of time picking up my stuff, figuring out where to put it, or dusting it.

5. Clutter is a form of procrastination

We all procrastinate and in a lot of ways, clutter is a form of procrastination. Leo Babauta noted, "While our tasks and projects can pile up, giving us some anxiety, the clutter is a visual sign of that procrastination, and carries with it just as much anxiety."

Remember, your experience with the challenge will be different from mine. The idea is to figure out what material goods belong in your life and living space.
Joshua Becker, the blogger behind Becoming Minimalist, moved with his small child a few years ago and suggests an overall strategy for stress-free moving with kids. "Your kids pick up quickly on your emotions. If you are relaxed and excited, your kids will be relaxed and excited," says Becker. "On the other hand, if you are stressed about the move, your kids will be stressed. View your move as an exciting adventure that will bring you closer together as a family."

By following a few simple steps, you can make moving with kids a stress-free experience for you and your children.

1. Validate your child's feelings

Tina Smith, a child psychologist (and parent) based in Chico, Calif. says, "It's important to tell your child what's going on, regardless of their age." You'll want to validate your child's feelings, listen to them, and give them time to process their feelings. For example, some children might get really excited about your upcoming move, whereas other children will feel sad. Let your child know that those feelings are normal.

Second, you'll want to communicate with your child and inform them of the end goal. For instance, tell them you will be moving on a specific date and plan to have all the boxes packed. And you can take validating your child's feelings one step further by making them part of the move.

Smith points out: "Children love to help organize, fill up boxes and sort through stuff. It's a great way for young children to learn spatial recognition skills. While the kids are having fun and learning, you're getting packing done."

2. Have your kids pack a "most important box"

Becker recommends having each of your kids pack their own "most important" box, labeled specifically for their new room. "Upon arrival at your new home, it can be located and unpacked quickly, ensuring that your kids have their most beloved things readily available for the very first night," explains Becker. As any parent knows, certain toys or items give kids a sense of security, so when you're moving with kids, it's important to make sure that those are readily available.

3. Create a "wait bag"

Smith reminds us that young children don't like to stand still for long periods of time. Whether you're waiting for an airplane or moving truck, kids are going to run around and create stress for their parents. Smith says that one of the things that she created to address this problem during a recent trip was a "wait bag." The wait bag is a special bag that your kids get to play with during the times they might get most bored. For example, the wait bag might be filled with games, magnets, or Play-Doh. The basic concept of this special bag is to keeps your kids occupied.

4. Be patient while adjusting to a new neighborhood

"Every child is different," Smith explains. "Some are introverted and others are extroverted. What might work with some kids, might not work for another." So while you want to encourage your child to be interested in their new surroundings, you certainly don't want to force the issue. Smith suggests general tips for moving with kids that you can incorporate into your routine to make them acclimate a bit better.

For instance, on the first day in your new neighborhood take your child for a walk, that way they have a sense of where home is. Introduce yourself to new neighbors, but don't go overboard. If your child becomes tired or irritable, that's a sign that that they need a break. Smith suggests going back home, relaxing, and trying again the next day.

Becker recommends connecting with a kid-friendly church. "If there are kids present at the church, it is a good indicator that kids like being there and the church loves children," he says. "Again, this will provide your kids with opportunities for new friends and offer the parents new opportunities as well. These opportunities can be especially helpful if one of the parents if not employed full-time."

Becker also suggests checking with the local parks and recreation department for kid-friendly programs, because getting outside for some fun and healthy exercise is a great way to reduce stress for the whole family.

5. Keep your schedule the same

Try not to vary from your normal schedule. Kids like security and don't like their routines to be interrupted. So make sure you give them a bath, book and bedtime the same as before the move.

6. Have fun and stay positive!

"Moving should be seen as a positive and helpful experience that can teach kids how to make new friends," Becker says. "Your child will inevitably make new friends following the move, and this reinforces their self-image. It also helps them learn how to make the most of new experiences and how to adapt to change. A move actually helps kids build valuable life skills."

Ultimately both Smith and Becker emphasize that moving with kids is about making the best of a transition and having fun during the process. Being flexible and giving up the idea that things need to go perfectly will go a long way toward reducing stress during a big move.
The stuff might be useful, but it doesn't have a designated home and the result is a drawer full of clutter.

For those of you with a cluttered junk drawer, consider the following strategies to clean it out:

1. Sort and remove your stuff.

After you've taken all the stuff out of your junk drawer, the Everyday Minimalist suggests going through each pile and throwing out "what is really too small or unable to be useful for anything in the foreseeable future. Test what you can to make sure they still work such as pens for ink. If that red pen is dried out & useless, now is the time to toss it!"

2. Make sure everything has a home.

Rather than throwing a hodgepodge of stuff into a drawer, find a home for each items. If your stuff has a designated place to hang out, this will make your life a lot easier. For instance, the next time you look for your tape measure you won't have to sort through your junk drawer!

3. Blockade the problem area.

For me, this meant taping the junk drawer shut. By putting stuff away or blocking off an clutter-prone area, your house will become less cluttered and more organized. And remember if you haven't used the item in 30 days, donate it to charity!
And the latest trend in the gardening world is called string gardening. The idea is simple: Grow your vegetables from the ceiling instead of the floor. Plus, string gardens don't take up much space and are a simple yet elegant addition to any room.

Rachel Cernansky from Planet Green said, "Fedor van der Valk, a clever guy from the Netherlands, has worked out a way to grow a surprising range of plants, from (small) trees to flowers to tomatoes."

Originally Fedor created these gardens as an art installation. By using string, moss, grass, and bowls, these plants are transformed into living works of art, similar to the Japanese botanical style, kokedama.
The folks at Urban Garden explained that some string gardens "have built-in glass reservoirs. Others have an artificial root made from different kinds of moss which transports the water to the ball, others have a dripping system that keeps keeps the containing net consistently wet." Most of the plants need to be watered every three days.

Be sure to stop by The String Garden website and order a few plants for your tiny abode.
So this is the perfect time of year to organize and weed out your winter wardrobe. After you've purged your closet, you should have more space to hang your clothing. But if you're like most apartment dwellers you might need a little extra space for big bulky items like sweaters and coats.

Let's take a look at a few free-standing storage solutions.

1. Storage cubes

Harri Koskinen's beautifully designed birch storage cubes would be perfect in my apartment. But they are quite expensive and aren't very feasible for those of us on a budget. However, the IKEA Molger series has a number of cool bench and storage stools that are inexpensive.

2. Vintage luggage or suitcases

Incorporating vintage luggage or suitcases into freestanding storage units is one way to store seasonal items like gloves, sweaters, and coats.

3. A skinny free-standing closet or dresser

Typically, small dwellings don't have a lot of built in closet space. But there are a plethora of freestanding closets and drawers that you can incorporate into your small space. Apartment Therapy has an excellent roundup of wardrobe solutions.

Find Apartments and Homes for Rent

See Homes for Rent

Some of these options are pricey. But the photos will give you good ideas of what to look for at your local thrift store. And if you're really crafty you can make your own wardrobe.

4. A few good coat racks

I'm loving the Dots Wood Coat Hook by Norwegian design studio Tveit & Tornoe. Apartment Therapy points out, "The simplicity of the grouping of five round pegs makes an excellent, minimal coat rack. We'd love to see these in a small entry way, or even on the wall next to a door."

I agree!

If the Dots Coat Hook doesn't suit your fancy, be sure to check out the recent coat rack roundup at Design Sponge.
The key is incorporating simple, small, and inexpensive design ideas into your living space.

Follow the tips below and I guarantee you'll add more depth and warmth to your abode:

1. Small space? Big pattern!

Use fabric to create depth in your apartment. For example, you can head to your local craft store and pick out a variety of fabrics that can be used as curtains, living room decor, or doorways.

Another option is using bold wallpaper patterns. Teresa's 65-square-foot S.F. kitchen is a beautiful example of this strategy. This little kitchen not only seems larger, but packs a punch of cheer.

2. Do it with mirrors

Small spaces don't require big accessories. To make your home seem bigger, consider the magic of large mirrors.

Zoe Feldman even suggests incorporated "mirrored furniture" into your space. Mirrored and "clear Lucite or glass-furniture can reflect light and make the room feel light and airy."

3. Use floor pillows + unique chairs

Last week, I talked about finding the perfect chair for your tiny space. Get the bulky furniture out. Consider using big pillows as chairs or invest in a few tiny, yet unique chairs.

When you're looking for the perfect chair, think about comfort, movability, and simplicity.

4. Don't forget about the importance of lighting

Lighting ideas for small spaces are all over the Internet. And since I've been looking into lightening up my apartment, I've been scouring the Internet for ideas.

Earlier this week, I discovered a cool and minimalist LED lamp called "001" by designer Naama Hofman. The fixture is made "of a [bent] metal rod with LED illumination." And Hofman says, "the light fixture can be placed in several positions: on the table, leaned against the wall, or [hung] on a wall."

The lamp is unique, elegant, and available in any color.

What would you add to the list?
Especially, when floor space is limited. However, Apartment Therapy recently posted a clever solution to this problem. By incorporating a variety of pendant lamps into your small space, you can create "an eclectic look along with a pleasant overhead glow."

The folks at Apartment Therapy recommend "choosing pendant lamps of different textures and sizes and hanging them at different heights to create depth and interest. This also creates a layered light source with a softer effect than a single flat overhead fixture."
Speaking of cool lighting options, I'm loving these handmade hanging lights from brownehsieh. The new "MothEaten" line of lights is "inspired by moths' inexplicable attraction to bright lights." These lights will bring an artistic flare into your living space.

And don't forget using both natural and artificial lighting will make any small room look larger. So say goodbye to heavy curtains and open up the windows to let the natural light into your space. In addition, consider incorporating floor lamps, track lighting, or recessed lighting into your lighting scheme.
So picking a comfortable, yet well designed sofa is one key to designing a comfortable living space. This is especially important for those of you who live in small apartments. A sofa that's too big can overwhelm a living room and leave you feeling cramped.

But don't fret: All you have to do is follow a few simple rules, and you'll be set.

1. Measure your space.
Before you head to the store, get out your tape measure out and evaluate your living space. Figure out how much room you have to work with. For example, I've made the mistake of trying to fit an oversize sofa into a super-small apartment. So know your limits. That way you don't waste time disassembling a sofa or trying to sell it on craigslist.

2. Think multi-functional.
Consider integrating unique and multi-functional sofas into your home. The Matrjosjka is a perfect example of this concept. It's more than a sofa. You can also use it as a bed, dinner table, office, or storage unit.

3. Avoid impulse buying.
If you decide to purchase a sofa from a department store, don't get talked into buying the matching loveseat. Impulse buying is hard to resist, but remember you have limited space to work with. Plus, you don't want to overspend.

4. Be bold!
It might be "safe" to go with black, brown or some kind of neutral color. But why not go with a bold color, like orange? Trying out a new color scheme might be just the thing that your little apartment needs. However, if you decide to stick with a more neutral color you can always spice things up with a few colorful pillows.

5. Tips to consider.

Make sure you new sofa will actually fit through the front door. And measure any hallways or stairwells that you might have to navigate.

Remember you don't have to spend a whole paycheck on a new sofa. You can find cool options on craigslist and freecycle.

And take a moment to read the handy sofa guide by the folks at Design Sponge.

But she was in for a huge shock. As Cheryl drove up her street she saw a large blaze, and in front of her apartment complex, fire engines. Along with many other residents, Cheryl lost her home. And it turns out that the fire was caused by a faulty electric blanket that she had left on in her apartment.

According to Tom Olshanski, spokesman for the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), "fires are burning hotter and faster" because of the high level of plastics in buildings. The poisons and gases emitted during fires are extremely deadly. Olshanski notes that every year over 4,000 people lose their lives and over 25,000 people are injured in apartment fires.

Fires in apartment buildings aren't necessarily something you cause, often times you need to contend with safety hazards caused by your neighbors.

So how can you be sure you're safe in your apartment building?

Olshanski recommends the following:

1. Make sure your smoke detector is working.
Over half the people who are injured in fires will lose their lives because they aren't protected by working smoke alarms. Olshanski points out, "Having a working smoke alarm is like having a firefighter in your home." And if your smoke alarm is over 10 years old, replace it. And make sure you test your smoke alarm periodically.

2. Talk to your landlord or building manager.
Ask your building manager about fire safety features in your building (fire alarms, sprinklers, voice communication procedures and how to respond to an alarm).

3. Know the locations of fire extinguishers.
Apartments buildings are often required to have fire extinguishers near each apartment unit; either in the unit itself or in the hallway. "Each and every jurisdiction has different requirements. A check with local a fire department can quickly answer any questions about the (fire extinguisher) regulations in their area," Olshanski explains.

4. Learn your building evacuation plan.
Take some time and talk to your family about your fire evacuation plan. Discuss what measures need to be taken if a fire were to break out at 2 in the morning? Be prepared, plan, and practice your evacuation plan with your family and neighbors.

5. Consider a building's overall layout.
Know of at least two ways to get out of your apartment building and have a predetermined meeting place for your family, safely away from your building.

6. Do occasional building inspections.
For example, check the storage facilities in your building. Make sure fellow residents are not storing gas near the furnace or have cardboard boxes stacked near the furnace. You can also request that the local fire department come out and inspect your building.

Cheryl is aware that if she had followed basic fire safety tips, her home as well as the homes of her neighbors would not have been lost in a fire. In the end, Olshanski notes that fire prevention comes down to following general safety tips and by paying attention to these tips, you can keep you, your belongings and your apartment safe from a devastating fire.
You just have to think outside the box. And when I stumbled upon Esta Sketch's latest creation I jumped for joy!

Esta Sketch made a beautiful framed display of her favorite books, using "Postcards From Penguin -- 100 Book Jackets in One".

There are a number of amazing titles and designs to choose from, but Esta Sketch said, "I decided for now to stick with a blueish selection to compliment the blue/grey tone of the room. (though I could have easily gone with a bedroom themed selection, with such titles as 'The Big Sleep,' 'Hotel Splendide,' 'Tender Is the Night,' 'The Horizontal Man,' 'Lady Chatterley's Lover,' 'Together,' or perhaps 'Mantrap,' 'Dangerous Curves' or even 'Vile Bodies' for those with a stranger sense of humour...)"

So what do you need for this inexpensive, fun project? Esta Sketch suggests using:

2 x Ikea RAM frames, 38 x 48cm and mounting them with 3M Command picture hanging strips.

2 x Pieces white mountboard.

1 x pack photo mounting corners.

And "Postcards From Penguin -- 100 Book Jackets in One." If Penguin doesn't have the postcards you're looking for, consider scanning your favorite book covers.

You'll also need a few tools, including a ruler, protractor, a pencil and an eraser.

Voila! You have the perfect solution to display books without taking up a lot of space.
However, you don't have to let your space go to waste. Say goodbye to big, bulky chairs and incorporate a few of these simple and well-designed pieces into your home.

1. Twin Chair by Philippe Nigro

The Twin Chair has two layers that can be stacked together for everyday use and separated when you need a few extra seats. Apartment Therapy pointed out, "The idea is one of those that's so clear and simple that we're all wondering why we didn't think of it earlier. 2. The Murakami Chair by Rochus Jacob

Designed by Rochus Jacob, The Murakami Chair has an attached lamp and it's powered by rocking back and forth. A simple, elegant, rockin' idea.

Jacob said, "Complexity is covered by simplicity. Advanced nano-dynamo technology which is built in to the skids of the chair and more efficient light sources such as the newly developed OLED generation makes it possible to build a rocking chair with a reading lamp running on electricity generated from the rocking motion. During daylight the energy gets stored in a battery pack."

3. The Emeco 111 Navy Chair
The chairs have clean lines, a retro look, and are made in the USA!

4. Ikea POÄNG

The Ikea POÄNG is one of my favorite chairs. The POÄNG is comfortable, light weight, and easy to move. Plus the chair makes a slight rocking motion; it's perfect for weekend lounging and reading.

Living lightly and creatively in a small space can be difficult, especially if you are surrounded by clutter. And when you're just getting started, the idea of decluttering is overwhelming.

So here's my suggestion: Start small. Take 10 minutes out of your day and remove the clutter from one area of your house. Before you know it your junk drawer will be clean, then your closet, and eventually your whole house!

Below are 10 easy and fast ways to get your decluttering groove on:
1. Designate a spot for incoming papers.

2. Create a no-clutter zone.

3. Clear off a counter and shelf.

4. Clean out a junk drawer.

5. Clean out and organize your medicine cabinet.

6. Pick up 10 things and find places for them.

7. Set-up a "maybe box" for items that you will potentially donate.

8. Teach your kids where things belong.

9. Pull out some clothes you don't wear and donate them to your local thrift store.

10. Downsize your library.

11. Schedule a decluttering weekend.

And remember: The decluttering process takes time. Your first step is always the hardest. But after you get started you'll be off and running in no time.

What would you add to the list?
Cooking burgers, kebobs, and other barbecue delights have been on my mind all week. It's time to get cooking!

But before you bring out the barbecue, consider incorporating some of these eco-friendly tips into your grilling routine.

1. Say no to disposable products.

Reuse, reuse, reuse! Say no to disposable barbecues, cups and plates. Use what you have at home. Or you can purchase reusable, BPA free, dishwasher safe plastic plates, silverware, and cups, from Preserve Products.

2. Look into green grills.

Need a new grill? Rented Spaces has you covered. Take a look at "these cost-effective ways to grill your food."

Also, don't forget to consider infrared grills. They are growing in popularity and have some advantages over a traditional grill. For instance, they heat quickly and use less energy and gas than your typical gas grill.

3. Purchase sustainable charcoal.

Charcoal and briquettes are the least expensive option for fueling the barbecue fire, but they are not environmentally friendly. Jeremy Taylor, from About My Plant, pointed out, "Every time you fire up the charcoal, you're sending soot and carbon monoxide into the air."

The solution is simple. Purchase charcoal from sustainable sources or look for charcoal that's free of chemical additives. And my favorite option is using coconut shell charcoal. It is chemical free and burns without harmful emissions.

4. Ditch the starter fluid.

Lighting up the barbecue isn't an easy task and most lighter fluids emit nasty chemicals. However, you can use an electric charcoal starter or try out a charcoal chimney starter.

Another fun option is the One Light[TM] Charcoal bag. It "is the only single-use charcoal bag with an internal chimney that uses air rather than harmful accelerants to ignite and roast the charcoal. No lighter fluid added or needed."

5. Clean up your mess without using toxic cleaners.

Do you know what's in your cleaning products? Make sure you take a look at the label. If you don't like what you see, consider using soy and natural alternatives or the Simple Green Heavy Duty BBQ & Grill Cleaner. These products are biodegradable, non-toxic, and recyclable!

DIY cleaners are another inexpensive alternative. You can clean your grill with a paste made from baking soda and water. Just add it to your barbeque brush and start scrubbing.

Happy Green Grilling!
