Amid a housing market marked by credit concerns and price depreciation, getting hit with a huge property tax bill can really hurt. Northeasterners feel the biggest pinch, while in California, where properties are among the country's most expensive, property tax rates are a third of those in the Northeast. Property tax rates in the Midwest and South are comparable to the Northeast, but the homes there are often half as valuable, making the amount paid in taxes significantly less.
