Homeowners in these towns spend more -- 35% or more of their income -- on housing costs. To determine the rankings, Forbes used data from the U.S. Census 2005-2007 American Community Survey, which polled more than 2,500 regions with 20,000 to 64,999 residents. The data show areas with homeowners spending the greatest portions of their income on monthly owner costs, including mortgages, home equity loans, real estate taxes, insurance, utilities, monthly condo fees and mobile home costs.
